MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Our Middle School Program, which includes grades 6th, 7th, and 8th, serves as a bridge between the Elementary School and the High School to provide a more gradual and appropriate transition between the two.

The Middle School Program is based upon the developmental needs, and interests of young adolescents.

Our educational goals, curriculum content and instructional processes are based on current educational research on the importance of middle school education.

We have taken as our base the eight principles of the Carnegie Council of Adolescent Development for improving education at the Middle School level:

i. Creation of smaller communities for learning so each student will receive sustained individual attention.

ii. Teaching a core of common knowledge to all students in ways that foster curiosity, problem solving, and critical thinking.

iii. Utilizing cooperative learning and other techniques suitable for this developmental phase to ensue success for virtually all students.

iv. Major decision making responsibility about young adolescent’s schooling is given to teachers and principals.

v. Teachers are experts at teaching young adolescents staff middle schools.

vi. The education and health of young adolescents are inextricably linked throughout the curriculum and the activities of the school.

vii. Families are allied with school staff through mutual respect, trust, and communication.

viii. Schools and communities are partners in educating young adolescents.

The Middle School program counts with homeroom teachers to serve as guides for the students and which they will see every day. They will be assigned lockers as a way of getting the student organized and ready for their next class in the time period allotted.

The Counseling Department will monitor the students overall progress at school, take the necessary measures to ensure the well being of the students, and address their individual needs.

The American School Middle School program prepares students to be successful individuals in Middle School. Should you have any questions regarding our Middle School Program, please contact the Principal.

Overall, the Middle School Academic Program provides students with a stimulating learning environment that focuses on the development of the whole individual. Critical thinking skills, writing skills, research skills, problem solving skills, and character development are the basis for the curriculum.
